WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is a fatty acid, or lipid, that is a fuel for your body and essential to repair and build cells. While it is an essential nutrient for your health, too much of a good thing can be damaging. Doctors usually look primarily at two types of cholesterol in your blood stream: LDLs and HDLs. LDLs are low-density lipo-proteins that carry cholesterol from your liver to the cells in your body. HDLs are high-density lipo-proteins that carry excess cholesterol back to the liver to be disposed. A higher ratio of HDLs is believed to reduce the risk of heart disease. Most researchers believe raised levels of LDLs create potentially deadly plaque in your blood vessels over time. Lowering these levels can reduce your risk of plaque blockages that can result in heart disease or strokes.
LIVING WITH DIABETES

Poorly controlled diabetes leads to a high risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and amputations. Maintaining blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight in line with recommended healthy ranges, along with not smoking, will help prevent complications and promote healthy living.
WHAT IS HYPERTENSION?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects one in three Americans. High blood pressure makes your heart work harder to pump blood to the body and contributes to hardening of the arteries and the development of heart failure. Unmonitored and untreated, it can lead to a stroke, heart attack or even kidney failure. Treatment is normally a multi-pronged approach including changes in diet, use of medication and exercise.
